Inviscid coalescence of drops
We study the coalescence of two drops of an ideal fluid driven by surface tension. The velocity of approach is taken to be zero and the dynamical effect of the outer fluid (usually air) is neglected. Our approximation is expected to be valid on scales larger than ℓ ν = ρν 2 /σ, which is 10nm for water. Using a high-precision boundary integral method, we show that the walls of the thin retractin...
متن کاملCollision Efficiency of Nearly Equal Cloud Drops
Recomputation of the collision efficiency of nearly equal water drops falling in air gave values which increase as the size ratio approaches uiiity for radii of the bigger drop larger than 6 3 p, and decreased as though tending toward zero for smaller radii. For the bigger radii the new computcd values are consistent with experimental results, but for radii around 40 ,U they are not.
متن کاملCoalescence of Liquid Drops
When two drops of radius R touch, surface tension drives an initially singular motion which joins them into a bigger drop with smaller surface area. This motion is always viscously dominated at early times. We focus on the early-time behavior of the radius rm of the small bridge between the two drops. The flow is driven by a highly curved meniscus of length 2πrm and width ∆ ≪ rm around the brid...
متن کاملElectrically Charged Conducting Drops Revisited
Since its publication in 1882, Rayleigh's work on electrically charged conducting drops has been widely quoted, but its rigorous derivation has not been given in the literature. By means of the domain perturbation technique, this work presents a rigorous derivation of Rayleigh's results, following his approach with Lagrange's equation. With the systematic procedure, it becomes explicit that the...
متن کاملCoalescence and Breakup of Oppositely Charged Droplets
The coalescence process of oppositely charged drops for different electrical conductivities of liquids is presented. When the electrical conductivity was relatively low, oppositely charged drops failed to coalesce under sufficiently high electrical fields and capillary ripples were formed on the surfaces of droplets after rebound. For a high electrically conductive liquid, it was found that a c...
